Robert A. Stern

Robert A. Stern is a resident partner in the New York and New Jersey offices of Clausen Miller P.C., and serves as the chair of the East Coast Subrogation/Recovery Department. Additionally, Mr. Stern is the senior partner of a team of attorneys that handle coverage and defense cases, providing him with a unique perspective on the successful and cost-effective manner of handling cases. Mr. Stern has extensive experience in losses caused by fire; explosion; collapse; flood; and product, structural, metallurgical, chemical, electrical and mechanical failures. Mr. Stern’s coverage and litigation cases have involved various types of products, piping, wiring, structures, roofs, transformers, generators, vessels, boilers, public utility equipment, dams, vehicles and HVAC systems. Mr. Stern has also handled many aviation/maritime, reinsurance, intellectual property, casualty/liability and life/health/disability claims. His cases involve national and international matters.
Mr. Stern is included on the New Jersey Courts' Statewide Roster of court-approved mediators as a R. 1:40 qualified mediator. Also, Mr. Stern has an "AV" rating with Martindale-Hubbell indicating the highest ranking in legal ability and ethical standards as determined by his peers in the legal community. He was named a 2006 and 2007 New York Super Lawyer in General Litigation Practice. Mr. Stern is a Certified Property Subrogation Arbitrator and has been listed as a member in the Global Register’s Who’s Who in Executives and Professionals. Mr. Stern is currently the Editor-In-Chief of the CM Report of Recent Decisions, New York edition.
Mr. Stern received his Bachelor of Arts degree in political science/economics and recognition for completing the degree requirements for a Bachelor of Science in psychology from Union College. He was awarded a Juris Doctor from Boston University School of Law. Prior to practicing law, Mr. Stern was employed with various law enforcement and investigative entities, including the Department of the Treasury, United States Customs Service.
Mr. Stern is licensed to practice law in the state and federal courts of New York, New Jersey and Massachusetts. He has successfully litigated cases in state and federal trial and appellate courts in various jurisdictions throughout the United States. Mr. Stern has also worked with attorneys in Canada, Europe and the Middle East on numerous international litigations. He has also tried, arbitrated, mediated and negotiated hundreds of cases, including multi-million dollar and high profile disputes.
Mr. Stern frequently presents seminars and articles of interest to insurers. He has received the New York County Lawyers Association’s Certificate of Appreciation for pro bono work from 1992 through the present, the New York State Bar Association’s Certificate of Appreciation and was awarded the title “Partner in Education” by the New York City Public Schools. He was also co-editor of the Youth Law Manual and a legal research assistant for the treatise “Securitization.”
