Richard L. Murphy

Richard L. Murphy is an equity partner with Clausen Miller P.C. who has concentrated his practice in medical malpractice litigation for many years. He has been the primary attorney on more than four hundred medical malpractice cases and has been to verdict thirteen times in medical malpractice cases, obtaining a defense verdict in each.
His clients include heart surgeons, obstetricians, infectious disease specialists, ENT surgeons, neonatologists, orthopedic surgeons, anesthesiologists, gastroenterologists, emergency room physicians, internists, radiologists and general surgeons. Successful trial verdicts include the defenses of a general surgeon following the death of a patient from necrotizing fasciitis; a family practitioner following a death from a ruptured abdominal aortic aneurysm; an ob-gyn whose patient, a thirty-five-year-old mother of four, died during a tubal ligation; and a general surgeon in a case of a retained lap sponge.
Mr. Murphy has an “AV” rating with Martindale-Hubbell indicating the highest ranking in legal ability and ethical standards determined by his peers in the legal community. He has also been selected as a Leading Lawyer in the area of Medical Malpractice Defense.
He is a member of the Illinois Bar and the Trial Bar of the Federal Court for the Northern District of Illinois and is admitted to practice before the Federal Court of Appeals for the Seventh Circuit. In addition, Mr. Murphy is a member of the Chicago and American Bar Associations, the Illinois Association of Defense Trial Counsel, the Defense Research Institute and the Society of Trial Lawyers.
