Neil H. Ekblom

Neil H. Ekblom is a partner at Clausen Miller's New York office. Mr. Ekblom defends hospitals, physicians practices, physicians and related businesses in the health care field in health law matters. He handles transactional matters for businesses and professionals including formation, mergers, acquisitions, and he defends businesses in tort suits involving complex medical claims.

Mr. Ekblom has been a first chair trial lawyer for more than one hundred jury trials. After fulfilling his commitment of four years as a prosecutor at the Bronx County NY District Attorney's office, he joined the firm of Bower & Gardner as an associate in 1990, trying cases in medical malpractice defense as well as premises liability defense. After the dissolution of Bower & Gardner in 1994, he was named partner at a defense firm in Manhattan before moving his practice to Clausen Miller, P.C. In New York he has obtained reported defense verdicts in New York, Kings, Queens, Bronx and Richmond counties, Upstate New York, New Jersey, and the U.S. District Court for the Southern District. 

Mr. Ekblom recently won a string of 19 consecutive defense verdicts, saving his clients over 48 million in these cases alone.

Mr. Ekblom and his associates in the healthcare/med mal unit of the New York office routinely assist physicians in transactional and regulatory matters.  Services include drafting employment agreements, forming physician entities and arranging mergers or purchase of practices.  Existing contracts can be analyzed for statutory compliance including Stark and anti-kickback requirements.  The unit assists physicians with credentialing and compliance with regulatory requirements.  In addition, Mr. Ekblom represents physicians before the OPMC (Office of Professional Medical Conduct) and the Department of Health.  Recent healthcare transactions include assisting office based, and ambulatory, surgical centers with employment agreements and accreditation.

Mr. Ekblom has defended physician practice groups and medical billing companies in false claim litigation.  He routinely advices physicians on regulatory matters.

Mr. Ekblom has frequently been invited to speak before nurses, resident physicians and attending physicians at hospitals in New York City. The topics include compliance, risk avoidance and medical malpractice issues particular to certain medical specialties.

Mr. Ekblom obtained his law degree from Georgetown University Law Center in Washington, D.C. in 1985. He is rated "A.V." by Martindale-Hubbell and is admitted to practice in New York, New Jersey and Florida as well as the Southern District in New York and New Jersey District Court. In February, 2000, Mr. Ekblom was elected a Category One member of the Federation of Defense and Corporate counsel, an organization of Practicing lawyers devoted to representation of defense and corporate interests.

Mr. Ekblom lives in Bergen County, New Jersey with his wife Frances, son Neil, Jr. and daughter Margaret. He participates with his wife in hospital and community volunteer organizations in New Jersey and New York.
