Steven N. Novosad has been an attorney with Clausen Miller P.C. since 1985. A Chicago native, he is married and has three children. He received his undergraduate degree from Southern Illinois University in 1977 and his Juris Doctor from The John Marshall Law School in 1984. His practice generally concerns matters involving liability insurance coverage and coverage litigation, liability defense as well as arbitration, mediation and other alternative dispute resolution. His legal experience includes handling insurance coverage and defense regarding catastrophic injury and large loss property damage cases involving construction, construction defect, environmental claims, auto, premises liability, employer liability, products liability and related cases.

Mr. Novosad writes papers for and makes presentations to insurance companies, casualty adjusters, business owners and trade associations. Presentations and papers include topics in risk shifting in construction, additional insureds, targeted tenders, insured contracts, indemnity, insurance issues implicated in bankruptcy proceedings, the Illinois Wrongful Death Act, good faith settlements under the Illinois Contribution Act, issues in construction injury litigation, premises liability, liens, various aspects of complex issues in third-party liability practice, insurance bad faith, tort reform and other casualty insurance coverage issues. Mr. Novosad presented numerous presentations involving environmental insurance and defense issues involved in the "mold crisis".

Prior to his legal career, Mr. Novosad worked throughout high school and college,  for many years post graduate and during law school. His years of pre-law employment provides a breadth of experience that contributes to his ability to understand underlying issues that drive liability cases, offer insight needed to attempt to resolve matters promptly, efficiently and ethically, while facilitating a common sense pragmatic approach using litigation only when necessary.

Mr. Novosad is a member of the Illinois State Bar Association, Defense Research Institute, the Illinois Association of Defense Trial Counsel, the Chicago Bar Association and the Lake County Bar Association. He is admitted to practice in all Illinois state courts and the Northern and Central Illinois federal district courts. His practice has also involved representing clients in litigation pending in other states under pro hac vice admissions. He also has been designated as an arbitrator in alternative dispute resolution matters.

Mr. Novosad is also a founding member and serves on the Board of Directors of Black Diamond Charities, Inc. He helped establish it as an accredited 501(c)(3) not-for profit charitable corporation. Black Diamond Charities, Inc. was incorporated in 2011 to try to make a positive impact on the lives of our Armed Forces Personnel, show them that we care about what they have done to defend our country and, though the establishment of programs to help them learn project management type skills, help them in setting goals which will aid in their transition to civilian life. Another goal of Black Diamond Charities is to do what we can to help those children of parents who are having a difficult time by distributing back packs filled with age appropriate school supplies as well as to periodically restock the consumable supplies to help create a lasting positive attitude towards learning.
