Clausen Miller Hosts Illinois Supreme Court Justice Mary Jane Theis
October 14, 2011
On October 14, 2011, Illinois Supreme Court Justice Mary Jane Theis presented to a full house of attorneys and staff at a luncheon hosted by Clausen Miller. Justice Theis provided an entertaining and informative overview of her work on the Illinois Supreme Court, including the nuts and bolts of case selection, review and analysis, oral argument and decision-making from the judge’s perspective. Justice Theis contrasted the work of the Supreme Court with that of the Illinois Appellate Court, First District, where she sat with distinction for 17 years, including service as Chief Justice.
Justice Theis also discussed her longstanding commitment to ensuring access to justice and how the high costs of litigation are adversely impacting individuals and businesses at all economic levels.
Following her presentation, Justice Theis answered numerous questions from the audience. Justice Theis’ observations and insights were appreciated by all who attended, especially the members of Clausen Miller’s Appellate Practice Group, who have regularly appeared before Justice Theis during her tenure on the Illinois reviewing courts.
Justice Theis was appointed to fill out the term of Justice Fitzgerald, who retired from the bench in October 2010. Justice Theis is now running to be elected to a permanent seat on the Illinois Supreme Court.
