Biography

Joe is a partner in the Clausen Miller Appellate Practice Group, licensed in both New York and Illinois. Joe serves as appellate counsel at trials around the country, providing support to trial attorneys as needed and helping with preservation efforts.  Joe has litigated appeals in federal and state courts, including Alabama, Illinois, Indiana, New York, New Jersey and the Seventh, Eighth and Tenth Circuits. Joe has briefed appeals concerning Coverage, Property, Business/Commercial Litigation, Arbitration, Personal Injury Defense and Product Liability.

In Purvis v. Oest, 614 F.3d 713 (7th Cir. 2010), a case with millions of dollars in potential exposure, Joe successfully obtained a reversal from the Seventh Circuit, granting judgment on appeal as to all three defendants on qualified immunity grounds.

In Maryland Casualty Co. v. Cheese Board Restaurant, Joe achieved the unheard of result of persuading a trial court judge that he had committed reversible and prejudicial error during the trial, requiring the judge to vacate the verdict in favor of our opponent and set the matter down for a retrial for our client.

Joe has acted as appellate counsel at numerous trials, including a 3-week wrongful death/personal injury trial in Macon County, Missouri; a 2-week personal injury trial in the Circuit Court of Winnebago County, Illinois; a 2-week wrongful death trial in the Circuit Court of Champaign County, Illinois; and a 3-week FELA action tried in the Circuit Court of Rock Island County, Illinois. Joe also acted as appellate counsel during a 2-month trial in the Borough of Queens, New York, in a personal injury/wrongful death trial involving the greatest number of injuries and deaths to firemen before 9/11.

Joe joined Clausen Miller following graduation from Loyola University Chicago School of Law. Joe received his Juris Doctorate, magna cum laude, from Loyola, finishing 3rd out of a class of over 200. Joe is an avid handball player, father of five, and Cubs major and minor league enthusiast.
