Biography

Professional negligence defense involves very complicated factual issues in an ever evolving legal landscape. We work directly with our clients so that both attorney and client understand the benefits and risks of any legal strategy. Our success comes from obtaining the best possible resolution, and is determined by client satisfaction.

Matthew Leis is a partner with Clausen Miller, P.C. in its casualty and liability department. Matthew’s practice is primarily focused on the defense of other professionals, including attorneys, engineers, architects, developers, and brokers. Utilizing his engineering background, Matthew’s practice also involves claims of construction defect, premises liability, roadway construction, products liability, Labor Law, and general negligence.

Matthew is admitted to practice before New York and New Jersey State Courts as well as the U.S. District Courts of the Southern and Eastern Districts of New York. He is also a certified facilitative mediator, with experience mediating disputes in a variety of practice areas.

Prior to joining Clausen Miller P.C., Matthew was a litigation associate with a national insurance defense law firm, where his practice also focused on defending claims against other professionals. Prior to that, Matthew began his legal career as an Assistant District Attorney in Kings County, New York, prosecuting misdemeanor and felony cases, and he has conducted many successful bench and jury trials.

Matthew received his undergraduate Bachelor of Science Degree in Mechanical Engineering from Lafayette College, and worked as a design and manufacturing engineer before entering law school. Mr. Leis received his Juris Doctorate from Hofstra University School of Law. His article, “South Africa’s Medicines and Related Substances Amendment Act of 1997 and the Agreement on Trade Related Aspects of Intellectual Property Rights” was published by the Journal of International Business & Law, and he later served as the Managing Editor of Production for that Journal.
