Biography

Sava Alexander Vojcanin is a senior partner whose practice focuses on resolving high-exposure property insurance matters. As coverage and litigation counsel, his experience includes appraisals, arbitrations, mediations, and litigation in jurisdictions across the United States and in England. As a litigator, Sava is hands-on and remains responsible for all phases of litigation, including trial and appeal. As a director, he is responsible for the day-to-day management of the Firm.

With nearly three decades of experience representing foreign and domestic companies and syndicates, Sava advises his clients with the objective of promptly addressing and resolving coverage issues and disputes without litigation. He is regularly appointed as coverage counsel in property damage, time element, and inland marine claims arising in a wide array of industries that have ranged from on-line computer gaming enterprises, hotels, warehouses, and textile plants to steel mills and food processing facilities. Often, claims exceed $100 million. And, in one matter he represented a group of 17 insurers where claimed losses approached $2 billion. He also has experience advocating for ceding insurers, reinsurers, and retrocessionaires in reinsurance matters.

Underwriters have solicited Sava’s advice in drafting and editing proposed policy terms, exclusions, and endorsements, most recently for unique cyber-security and risk cover. He also regularly represents liability insurers or their policyholders’ interests in matters involving property damage and lost profits. In the past, Sava served as national counsel to two Fortune 500 companies in nationwide pattern product liability litigation.  He has acted as market counsel for large loss subrogation recoveries in high-profile disasters including the First Interstate Tower fire.

As a Registered Foreign Lawyer in England and Wales, Sava’s practice has a global reach. He is a partner of Clausen Miller International, a cooperation of leading law firms practicing in all aspects of insurance and reinsurance law, dispute resolution, and liability law with representative offices in the United Kingdom and Europe.

Insurance industry groups and senior executives frequently invite Sava to speak on emerging issues in first-party property insurance law and to provide continuing education programs for lawyers and claims professionals. Based on his pro bono work, he periodically lectures on the First Amendment’s Establishment Clause. Notably, he is also editor of Law, Culture, and Values, a widely cited anthology of scholarly essays analyzing historical attempts to achieve distributive justice.

Sava has been recognized annually among Leading Lawyers, the Best Lawyers in America® and was named to the inaugural class of Illinois Super Lawyers. Licensed in Illinois and admitted to practice before the Supreme Court of the United States, Sava earned his J.D. from Washington University in St. Louis School of Law (1988) where he served as an editor of the Washington University Law Quarterly. He holds a B.A. with distinction from DePauw University (1985) and is a graduate of the Culver Academies (1981).
